Joyce Chen opened her first restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1958. She found that the selection and quality of Chinese cookware in America didn't live up to her high standards… so she developed her own. Today, Joyce Chen Products sources from all over the Pacific Rim to bring the best of Asia to you. This 3 piece Burnished Bamboo Stir Fry Tool Set includes three popular tools for making a delicious stir fry meal -- 9" Rice Paddle, 12" Mixing Spoon, and 13" Stir-Fry Spatula. Bamboo is stronger than wood and will not swell, split or absorb moisture. Bamboo is perfect for non-stick surfaces and is an abundant renewable resource. These Burnished Bamboo tools are oven-roasted to caramelize the naturally occurring sugars in the wood, which results in a beautiful honey color. In today's rapidly changing world, using renewable resources makes sense, even in the kitchen. Joyce Chen's burnished bamboo utensils are not only earth-friendly, but beautiful and practical. Bamboo, a grass, grows quickly to harvestable size and is considered an environmentally-sound replacement for slow-growing trees. Stronger than wood, the tools in this set won't scratch nonstick surfaces and are so tough they won't swell, split, or absorb moisture like wood can. Moreover, these are dishwasher-safe. The burnished honey color comes not from a stain but from oven-roasting, which caramelizes the bamboo's naturally occurring sugars.
Designed for stir-frying, this three-piece set includes a 9-inch rice paddle, 12-inch mixing spoon, and 13-inch stir-fry spatula, each with a hole for hanging. All are safe to use on any nonstick surface. Joyce Chen produces an impressive range of burnished bamboo kitchen tools and cutting boards, along with traditional woks and Asian-style cutlery for the dedicated home chef. --Ann Bieri

I have wooden spoons, but bought this bamboo set when I purchased a new electric wok. They are just perfect for stir-fry, and won't scratch the non-stick surface of my wok. I really like the size and shape of the rice paddle, and I thought that would be one piece I wouldn't use. It is just right for serving rice. Best of all, they are dishwasher safe, which is not the case with most wooden spoons. So far so good!

I love this stir-fry set, though I have to say... I've NEVER used it for stir-frying! I've used it for just about everything else in the kitchen, though. Even the shorter rice paddle has come in handy for all sorts of things (it's fairly flat, so you can even use it like a spatula). Also... It's sooo cheap! I feel like I should order a few more sets, just in case. I've already gotten it for friends and family to throw into a Christmas stocking or to wrap up with a cookbook or pan. The best part: they are dishwasher safe! I've washed mine over and over and have never had a crack. Awesome product.

THIS IS MY SECOND SET OF JOYCE CHEN BAMBOO UTENSILS, AND I LOVE THEM. THEY HAVE A WONDERFUL, DURABLE FINISH, AND WASH VERY WELL IN THE DISHWASHER. THEY'RE STURDY AND NICELY MADE. I REACH FOR THEM OVER WOODEN UTENSILS EVERY TIME.

I purchased these utensils because of the fair price -- and fair it was! Nothing to complain about there. But I was anticipating the stir fry utensils designed in 1925 by the legendary James Joyce himself, since adopted in his homeland of China. (In Beijing there are numerous dumpling houses named for Mr. Joyce, including the aptly titled Joyce's House of Dumplings, which Mr. Joyce was said to have visited upon the initial Chinese publication of Finnegans Wake in 1983.)
Rice paddle: In Mr. Joyce's grand design there are seven prongs to ensure maximum paddling ability. In this awful version there are no prongs to be seen anywhere, and the paddling experience leaves much to be desired (such as prongs). Alternative uses include fly-swatting, Orangutan-hitting and slapping linoleum countertops to the rhythm of the Billy Joel classic, We Didn't Start the Fire.
Mixing spoon: Completely unrecognizable from the expected Joyce-designed version. Mixing spoon lacks all spoonlike qualities, including an ample curvature for scooping. This here is the worst of the set, and is in fact nothing more than a flat stick on which "Joyce Chen" is written. Dreadful. Alternative uses: Primitive ruler ('I am this many mixing spoons tall'), or if you own a dog, fetch.
Stir-fry spatula: The sole redeeming quality of the entire set is the single spacious slot built into the spatula which allows steam to escape when stir-frying delicious vegetables and meats. Alternative uses: Ineffective oar for a small boat.
